At one time Delaware had over 800,000 peach trees and it’s peaches were so abundent and well known, that in the late 1800’s it was actually called the Peach State. The peach blossom was named the State
Floral Emblem on May 9th, 1895. Sadly shortly after that, a disease called peach yellows wipped out the majority of the orchards througout the state, reducing the millions of peach trees down to a tiny fraction of their past glory. Thankfully, there are still some family orchards that are proudly growing Delaware peaches. Keeping this tradition alive, each spring Delaware’s peach orchards burst into shades of pink, rosy coral, and soft orange, heralding the arrival of sweet, juicy peaches and the cobblers, preserves, peach pies, and peach crisps they inspire. This design celebrates Delaware’s beautiful peach blossom, a Delaware original since 1895.
